SMS Character Counter

Calculate Your SMS Message Length with Ease
How GSM Messages are Calculated

Our SMS character counter tool helps you determine how many parts your text message will be divided into, the total characters, the characters remaining per part, and more. Simply paste or type your text above to check your message length.

A standard GSM message is limited to 160 characters. If your message exceeds 160 characters, it will be split into parts of 153 characters each.

Example: A message with 160 characters counts as one message. However, a message with 161 characters will be divided into two parts: the first part with 153 characters and the second part with 8 characters.

Make it Exciting

To make your message stand out, use emotive language that conveys excitement, anticipation, or intrigue. This is particularly important in marketing messages that include a Call to Action (CTA).

Highlight Important Information

Since SMS does not support rich text formatting, use CAPITALS to emphasize key words or phrases. This helps draw attention to important information.

Use Emojis (Sparingly)

Emojis can effectively convey emotions and limit character usage. Ensure that emojis are supported by your SMS platform and check if using them increases costs. Avoid redundancy by not using an emoji and the corresponding word together.

Example: Use "Have you tried the 🐟?" instead of "Have you tried the fish 🐟?"

Include an Opt-Out Option (For Business)

In business SMS, it’s crucial to provide an opt-out option. For instance, include text like "Reply with 'STOP' to opt out of these marketing messages." This is often required by regulations and is always best practice.
